Car Insurance
Since 1993, Rhode Island has made car insurance mandatory. Get nabbed without a valid policy and your license will be taken away. This is not a law you want to test!
When you register your vehicle, you will be asked to sign a statement that guarantees you will maintain insurance during the duration of your current registration period.
The state employs a "tort" system of insurance. This dictates that the driver at fault is legally responsible for the other driver's subsequent medical, car repair, or personal property expenses related to the auto accident.
Minimum Insurance Requirements
Rhode Island's minimum insurance requirements are as follows:
- Bodily injury protection of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident
- Property damage coverage of $25,000
Proof of Insurance
Carrying proof of insurance when driving is mandatory. You must present this proof if requested by an officer. If you own insurance but don't have proof on you when asked, you will be given a short period of time to provide the requested documentation.
